Encrypted File Sharing for Defense, Government, and Regulated Data

Cocoon Data is a Sydney, Australia company founded by chief executive Trent Telford that builds encrypted file sharing and collaboration software. Its work began on mission-critical projects for intelligence and defense communities, and its customer base now centers on defense contractors, government agencies, healthcare providers, and financial services firms handling regulated data. The product, SafeShare, is sold in regional editions for US GovCloud, Australia, and the United Kingdom, plus an enterprise deployment, with regional plans starting at twenty-five dollars per user per month.

SafeShare encrypts each document with its own key and separates identity, policy, and key management from the stored file, so access can be revoked after a file has already left the sender. Controls include two-factor authentication applied to individual files, restrictions by user, location, and time, and digital watermarking that blocks downloading, printing, and screenshots. Every download, forward, and print is recorded, giving administrators an audit trail of who opened what alongside continuous monitoring of account and system activity.

Regulatory posture is the main differentiator: US data is stored in AWS GovCloud, the company holds ISO 27001 certification, and the platform is built for ITAR, CMMC 2.0, NIST 800-171 and 800-53, and UK G-Cloud requirements, with SafeShare reaching FedRAMP Ready status. Buyers typically treat shared material as controlled unclassified information, using the platform for CUI evidence collection and NDA-bound content. Cocoon Data also runs the platform carbon neutral and has launched Qanapi, a newer encryption platform extending the same approach beyond file sharing.
